On Monday June 10th, the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers presented the 2013 New Jersey Conference for the Social Sector, Our Shared Road Ahead: Sandy and Beyond at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel in Asbury Park.
Leaders from philanthropic organizations throughout the state (including community foundations, private and family foundations, and corporate foundations), along with advocates, policymakers, state- and federal-level disaster relief managers, and media were on hand to consider the progress that has been made in recovery efforts–and the work that lies ahead.
Speakers included Edith Lutnick, Co-founder and President of The Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund; Sherry Magill, President of the Jessie Ball duPont Fund; and John Davies, CEO of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation — shown below, left to right, with moderator Dr. Roland Anglin, Associate Research Professor at the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers University Newark.
Princeton Area Community Foundation VP of Grants and Programs Michelle Cash, who co-chaired the event, explained, “Sandy happened 8 months ago, but the long term impact will be felt across our state for years to come. It was wonderful to hear from social sector partners from across the country who have been dealing with those effects, sometimes for years. Hearing their advice and building relationships with them means that we will work more collaboratively with each other, and make the most of our limited resources as we build our state back stronger and better.”
The Council of New Jersey Grantmakers has shown great leadership since Sandy struck, mobilizing our state’s philanthropic sector and offering opportunities to learn and connect like weekly conference calls with national leaders in the field of disaster philanthropy, FEMA and HUD officials, renowned psychologists working in the field of Disaster Trauma and PTSD, local housing and mental health nonprofit leaders, city and state planners, and a host of other stakeholders.
