Because of Eleanor, our world is better
By Eleanor V. Horne and Jeffrey M. Vega
My name is Eleanor Horne, and as a young girl in school in Washington D.C. before the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision ordered the integration of nation’s schools, I remember opening books on the first day of classes and seeing school stamp after school stamp inked inside the covers. Those textbooks had circulated through several white schools in the district, then finally, when their spines were broken and bent, their pages creased and marked, those books made their way to my school.
I was in high school when I got my first new textbook – such a simple thing, but I remember being so excited.
I knew I wanted a better world for my daughter, for my grandson, for my great-grandson.
